The Order Commelinales contains monocotyledenous flowering herbs and climbers including the Commelinaceae (Spiderwort Family) in which succulence is a common feature, especially in the genus Tradescantia.
Flowers are well differentiated into sepals and petals and do not produce nectar. The superior ovary develops into a capsular fruit.
The Commelinales includes many popular house and garden plants. Trailing Tradescantia are widely grown as undemanding foliage plants. Callisia fragrans features in traditional medicine as a cure-all "for what ails thee".
